LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

You are five years old and it is your first day of kindergarten.  Your teacher asks everyone to gather in a circle and then she holds up a book.  “It’s time to read a story,” she says.  You are excited! You love this book.  Your doctor gave it to you, and you remember it is one of the books your mom reads to you every night.  Your teacher starts asking questions about the letters and words.  You proudly raise your hand first to answer her.  You listen eagerly and try to learn a new word to share with Mom and Dad when you get home.  You love reading and kindergarten, and you can’t wait until tomorrow to learn more.

Thanks to your support, you have helped instill this excitement for reading and learning in hundreds of thousands of children across Texas.  You also helped parents understand the importance of reading aloud every day with their children.  Your support has been invaluable in helping to prepare these children to enter school ready to read and excel.

Last year with your help, not only did we expand to serve additional children in ten new program Sites, we also:

  • Hosted a successful First Annual Reach Out and Read Texas Summit in collaboration with Texas PBS;
  • Broadened our reach with a special focus on clinics serving rural populations;
  • Launched our statewide website and social media networks to provide resources to medical providers, educators, and parents;
  • Continued to provide the Reach Out and Read intervention to over 257,000 children and families.

From El Paso to Austin to Brownsville, our programs are growing in numbers and strength due to your continued support. Whether you are a medical provider, clinic staff member, literacy advocate, educator, or parents, you are truly the “ambassadors” of the Reach Out and Read program.

The gift of reading lasts a lifetime.  We hope that you will choose to support Reach Out and Read this holiday season—and we’ve made it even easier to give to Reach Out and Read through our online giving.  A commitment at any level helps us to fulfill our mission of preparing our state’s youngest children for success in school.

As always, thank you for your commitment to the children and families we serve.  We wish you and your loved ones a joyous holiday season!

With great appreciation,

Amanda Marlow
Director, Reach Out and Read Texas

Highlights from the
2011 Reach Out and Read Texas Summit

We appreciate those who joined us at KLRU Studios this October for the First Annual Reach Out and Read Texas Summit!   The agenda featured presentations by Dr. Susan Landry, Dr. Robert Needlman, Earl Martin Phalen, Dr. Rosemarie Truglio and a panel of experts from the fields of education and health. This is the first time in Texas that we’ve showcased the statewide impact of the program as a key school readiness initiative.

The Summit also featured the premiere of two videos highlighting the Reach Out and Read program in Texas.  You can view them here.

Again, a special thank you to our speakers, sponsors, and to Texas PBS!   We hope to see you all for next year’s event!
