Letter from the Director

Happy fall!

Last month, medical providers and on-site coordinators across the state submitted their biannual Reach Out and Read progress reports. These reports not only provide valuable information, like the number of well-child visits and books distributed, but also give great insight on how Reach Out and Read impacts a clinic community.  It’s easy to see how great stories begin with Reach Out and Read:

“Reach Out and Read is a wonderful asset to our clinic. We provide primary care services to AISD high schools with daycare centers for pregnant and parenting teens. We now have a population of kids who ask for the books when they come on the mobile unit. Our parents understand the importance of reading for their children. We are a small volume site but I feel like we have a huge impact!”
- Dr. Marilyn Doyle, Children's Health Express, Dell Children's Medical Center

Do you have a story to share? I would love to hear from you and learn how Reach Out and Read makes a difference for the children and families you serve. We are looking for brief anecdotes to showcase on our website, Facebook, and in fundraising proposals. Providers who submit stories to by October 18, 2013 will receive 50 books for their Reach Out and Read program!

Thank you for your commitment to the future of Texas!

Peter and the Starcatcher

Reach Out and Read Texas is excited to partner with the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts during their run of Broadway’s Peter and the Starcatcher.  Our partnership includes a book drive at each of the shows between October 15th and October 20th. We are looking for local Reach Out and Read programs interested in participating in this book drive by:

  1. Providing 2 -3 staff members to work at the book drive – approximately 1.5 hours before show time until 30 minutes after doors close.
  2. Taking any books donated that evening back to their clinic for distribution through the Reach Out and Read program.  This is a great opportunity to supplement your annual book budget.  We will provide parking passes for those helping with the book drive.

Please let me know as soon as possible if your site is interested in participating and I will send you additional details.
