Letter from the Director

Dear Friends,

In anticipation of the first day of school, many children across Texas are visiting their pediatricians for well-child checkups.  I’ve met with providers at several sites this summer and one of my favorite things to see when walking into a clinic is a group of children huddled around a volunteer reader.  More often than not, I’ll also notice moms, dads, and grandparents sitting behind the group with smiles on their faces, enjoying story time just as much as their children. Our hope is that these parents and caregivers see the joy reading aloud brings to their loved ones and are inspired to replicate that behavior at home. 

What we know for sure is that Reach Out and Read is fortunate to have an army of volunteer medical providers encouraging parents to read to their children daily.  One of these providers, Dr. Rick Quiles, a pediatrician from Cranston, Rhode Island, has created a hip-hop video, “I Love it When I Read With My Papi!”  This video delivers a powerful message to dads about the importance of reading to their children. Thank you to Dr. Q and Reach Out and Read Rhode Island for sharing this fun video.

2013 Reach Out and Read Texas Conference

2013 ROR-TX Conference

Thank you to those who joined us for the 2013 Reach Out and Read Texas Conference on June 14th!   Attendees enjoyed a great morning of presentations from Ms. LaShonda Brown, Chair of the Texas Learning Council, and Dr. Dipesh Navsaria, Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Medical Director of Reach Out and Read Wisconsin (left). Copies of the presentations can be found by visiting our website.

If you received copies of the Texas Infant, Toddler, and Three-Year-Old Early Learning Guidelines, we’d appreciate your feedback.  Contact and let us know how you’re using the Guidelines with the children and families you serve!

Leyendo Juntos Training Course

The Reach Out and Read National Center is proud to announce the launch of the online, CME-accredited Reach Out and Read® Leyendo Juntos Training Course for Primary Care Providers. This course gives providers tools to help them promote early literacy among Spanish speaking families during the standard early health supervision visits!

In order to access the Leyendo Juntos course, Reach Out and Read providers MUST HAVE COMPLETED the initial Reach Out and Read online CME course which is accessed through using your unique Reach Out and Read user ID (typically your FirstName LastName) and password. Once the initial course is complete, you will be able to view and complete the Leyendo Juntos training.

Progress Reports are now available to complete online!

Progress reports are now available for you to complete online!  Please be sure to log into, and complete your progress report by September 1st. The reports will capture program data from January 1, 2013 through June 30, 2013.  Progress Reporting is a program requirement that provides us with important data.  Please contact me at 713-500-3849 if you need assistance or have questions.

Reach Out and Read sites with Progress Reports submitted by August 1st will be entered in a drawing for 100 NEW books from Scholastic.
